8 Regional Nominees Compete For 2023 Superintendent Of The Year Award


Eight outstanding school district leaders who have been chosen as regional Superintendents of the Year are vying for the 2023 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year Award. The award will be presented in a ceremony beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Greensboro/Koury Convention Center in Greensboro on Nov. 15.

The North Carolina A. Craig Phillips Superintendent of the Year is chosen jointly by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators (NCASA), NCASA’s core affiliate the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association (NCSSA) and the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA), with support and sponsorship from worldwide education leader Scholastic Education Soultions. The honor is awarded to a superintendent who exhibits outstanding leadership in service to K-12 public schools and is named in honor of the late A. Craig Phillips, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction in NC, who served from 1969-1989.

The eight regional winners and 2023 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year nominees are as follows:

  • REGION I | Northeast | Dr. Ethan Lenker, Pitt County Schools
  • REGION II | Southeast | Dr. Jerry Oates, Brunswick County Schools
  • REGION III | Central | Ms. Catty Q. Moore, Wake County Public School System
  • REGION IV | Sandhills | Dr. Aaron Fleming, Harnett County Schools
  • REGION V | Piedmont/Triad | Dr. Todd Martin, Yadkin County Schools
  • REGION VI | Southwest | Dr. Jeff Booker, Gaston County Schools
  • REGION VII | Northwest | Dr. Don Phipps, Caldwell County Schools
  • REGION VIII | Western | Ms. Angela Knight, Graham County Schools

The recipient named 2023 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year will represent the state in competition for the 2023 National Superintendent of the Year Award, to be given at the American Association of School Administrators’ National Conference on Education Feb. 16-18, 2023, in San Antonio, TX.
