With the 2023 NC legislative session officially underway, the NCASA Advocacy Team has prepared a list of legislator contact information by county, as well as a list of contact information for legislators serving on key education committees. Members are encouraged to use these resources to initiate conversations with the legislators that represent them, if they have not done so already, and share any relevant information with NCASA so we can better advocate on your behalf!

NCGA Shares Leadership Roles For Education Committees

House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) released on Tuesday a list of House committees, chairs, and members for the 2023 legislative session, which officially began last week. NCGA Kicks Off 2023 Legislative Session With Controversial House Rule

Members of the North Carolina Senate and House of Representatives were sworn in on Wednesday during a mostly ceremonial first day of the 2023 legislative long session. While the 30 Republicans and 20 Democrats in the NC Senate took their oaths of office, re-elected Sen. Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) as Senate President Pro Tempore, and passed their governing rules for the session without much fanfare, it was a different picture in the NC House.

House Education Committee Approves State Board of Education Changes, Other Bill Action

Members of the House K-12 Education Committee approved on Wednesday three bills, including one that proposes a constitutional amendment to change the governance structure of the State Board of Education. House Bill 1173, which was filed in the waning days of the legislative session, would allow voters in the November 2022 elections to decide whether positions on the State Board should be elected, rather than appointed by the Governor.
